"Get a Handle on your Chimney!"

What is the BOZ?
The BOZ Mechanical Chimney Sweep is a pulley-operated stainless steel brush that removes creosote buildup in metal chimneys in less than a minute.

When not being used, the brush is permanently stored in a special cap mounted at the top of the chimney above the smoke exit. The brush is moved through the chimney by a loop of stainless steel cable strung between two pulleys, one mounted at the top of the chimney, and one mounted at the bottom, near the smoke outlet of the stove. A hand crank attached to the bottom pulley operates the entire mechanism.

Is the BOZ hard to install?
No. A homeowner can install the BOZ with a pair of locking pliers, a screwdriver and an electric drill. You don't need any tools for the rooftop part of the installation.

Can the BOZ be installed in an existing chimney?
Yes. The BOZ is designed for installation in existing metal chimneys with 6 or 8 inch diameter flues. In addition, it can be adapted to many other chimney types.

Can the system be used in a brick or block chimney?
Yes. If the chimney is entirely vertical, the BOZ can be adapted by installing a stainless steel liner and an access door.

Will it work in chimneys that have elbows?
The BOZ will operate if the bend is no more than 15 degrees. In many cases, however, the elbow can be eliminated by using pipe shields, stove shields, and other methods.

Will the BOZ work with a spark screen?
Yes. An optional spark screen can be installed in the BOZ top cap. The spark screen is automatically cleaned anytime you operate the system.

How long will the brush last?
It has been tested for a daily-use life of over 27 years. The material used in the brush assembly is a special stainless steel alloy that does not lose its mechanical strength at the temperatures found in your chimney or flue.

Does the brush spin during use?
No. There are two brushes per assembly, each containing 48 tines. The top brush is offset from the bottom so that the tines completely cover the inside surface as the brush moves down and back up.

Will the brush damage the flue liner?
No. During the recent OMNI Laboratory testing procedure, a 10,000 cycle test showed no significant wear to either the brush or the flue liner. This is equivalent to a once-a-day cleaning every single day for over 27 years!

Does the brush block the chimney?
No. The brush stores above the smoke outlet at the top of the chimney when not in use.

Are there brushes available to fit different size chimney pipes?
Yes. The BOZ brushes are available in 6 or 8 inch diameter flues. In addition, it can be adapted to many other chimney types.

What about pulley wear?
The top pulley is made of a special weather resistant plastic with a temperature range of -85 degrees F to +225 degrees F. The ball bearing center is permanently lubricated, and sealed against any weather or contaminant effects. The bottom pulley, made of heat resistant high temper steel, is attached to the crank shaft which is mounted to the pulley housing pipe section with permanently lubricated bronze bushings.

Where does the creosote go?
If the chimney attaches to the top of the stove, the creosote simply falls into the stove and is burned up during the next fire. If the chimney attaches to the back or side of the stove, the creosote falls into a trap at the bottom of the chimney where it can be easily removed. If the stove has an internal baffle, daily use of the BOZ will prevent creosote accumulation and blockage.
